Prelude As with any genre, comedy has evolved in many different directions. Their use of humor may vary, depending on the time it was made, the place it was made and even the people who were watching it. This is not to say that all comedy is created equal; every comedian has their own style and takes on things they are comfortable with. The following text examines some of the more popular methods used in Bengali Comedy Drama Scripts during one particular period of time. Note that this analysis will only focus on comedic schemes rather than examining them as a whole. This is an analytical piece examining three Bengali comedy drama scripts written during a specific period of time to identify common trends within the genre. This section will examine the characteristics of these three dramas and discuss why they were written the way they were. The first of the three dramas that will be assessed is called "Paap" (1974). Written by Sunil Ganguly, this comedy drama focuses on two families, one rich and one poor. The play revolves around a relationship between the female members of the two families which changes over time. This switching of romantic partners is where much of the comedy aspect stems from. The main conflict in this comedy drama surrounds a man named Anupam who is set up to be part of an arranged marriage with Dolly, daughter to Rumaal, who happens to be employed by Anupam's family. Although Dolly is very sweet and kind to Anupam, she does tend to get overly attached to him and will not let go of him. This happens because she is aware that Anupam is engaged to Soni (the step-sister of Dolly). However, Soni has a change of heart about marrying Anupam and ends up marrying Santu (one of the two sons of Rumaal). Rumaal ends up losing everything due to his daughters. The second Bengal comedy drama written in 1974 was "Chhoto Bheokhe" (1974). This play was written by Nandini Paul and was set in Jalpaiguri. In it, two families live in a tree house. For the last fifteen years the two families have not met and know next to nothing about each other's lives. They are very wary of each other and describe themselves as "strangers". A woman named Sandhya moves into the tree house with her mother-in-law Parvati, who is still living in their village. Her husband had just died though she never liked him much. She is scared of her father-in-law and will not tell him about her dead husband or where she came from. During the play, Parvati says that Sandhya cannot be married to her son because she was married before to someone else (which he did not know about). Sandhya proves to be a very angry character throughout the play. She refuses to go out of her room and does not speak except to say that she is angry. The third Bengali comedy drama written in 1974 was called "Saalkhand" (1974). This play was also written by Nandini Paul and was set in Kolkata. This play revolves around three women who are all sisters who find out that they have the same biological father. They cannot imagine what this could mean for their lives so they all live separately from each other for many years after knowing about this revelation. cfa1e77820
